Update on Birth Year Review & Next Steps

We want to provide you with an important update regarding U.S. Soccer’s recent review on player registration.

After conducting an extensive review, including feedback from over 15,000 members, leagues, and clubs, U.S. Soccer has outlined a path forward that emphasizes flexibility to better serve the diverse needs of the soccer community.

Key Takeaways from U.S. Soccer’s Review:

  • Flexibility for the 2026/27 Season: Starting in the fall of 2026, Sanctioning bodies will have the option to organize registration by birth year or school year (further details TBD), based on what best supports their players and communities.
  • No Changes for the 2025/26 Season: All current registration systems will remain unchanged for the 2025/26 season, ensuring stability as organizations prepare for any transitions.
  • Resources and Support: U.S. Soccer will provide tools, training, and forums to guide clubs and leagues in making informed decisions and managing any changes smoothly.

What This Means for DPL Families:

At the DPL, we understand the nuances and potential implications of these changes for players, teams, and families across our member clubs. Rest assured that:

  1. No Immediate Changes: For the 2025/26 season, all DPL teams will continue to operate under the current structure, and no changes will be made to team composition or registration formats.
  2. A Seamless Transition: As we look ahead to the 2026/27 season, we will carefully evaluate the best approach for our league in collaboration with our sanctioning body, ensuring that every player has a place within the DPL. Our goal is to minimize disruption and maintain continuity for all families.
  3. Your Input Matters: We encourage our members to stay engaged with this process. Your feedback helps us understand your concerns and preferences as we prepare for this next phase.

Next Steps:

U.S. Soccer plans to finalize its implementation guidelines by March 2025.

Once these details are confirmed, we will communicate our plans for the 2026/27 season to all DPL members and provide any necessary support for the transition.

We appreciate your trust and commitment to the DPL. If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your club or our league leadership.

Together, we’ll continue to build a bright future for youth soccer.

Warm regards,
Barry Ritson
